Back to rootstock index

AKA:      EM 9, EMLA 9
Growth type:      Dwarf rootstock
Natural height:       ~ 10'...(3m)
Field spacing:      ~ 8' - 12' apart...(2.5 - 3.5m)
Soil suitability:      Can handle heavier soils and wet conditions but not so good for drier, lighter, soil
Strengths:      Good early cropping/ripening rootstock (3 years). Tends to promote larger fruit. . Resistant to collar rot. Very little suckering. Cold hardy to zone 5.
Weaknesses:      Surrounding area should be free from competing grass and weeds. Some mouse population control also advised when using this rootstock. Roots somewhat brittle.
Misc. notes:      Virus free. A large burr knot grows at the union which should be  a few inches above the ground. This rootstock has a small root system so trees will need to be permanently staked.
