.EM 26  (apple rootstock)

Back to rootstock index

AKA:      EMLA 26
Growth type:      Dwarf rootstock
Natural height:       ~ 12'...(3.5m)
Field spacing:      ~ 8' - 12' apart...(2.5 - 3.5m)
Soil suitability:      Prefers well-drained soil
Strengths:      Known to yield better fruit quality than EM VIIa and usually crops in the third year. Suckers are minimal (though fast-growing) and this rootstock exhibits some resistance to collar rot (unless planted in wet or infected soil). Able to withstand some competition from grass and weeds,
Weaknesses:      Roots are more supple than on EM VIIa but tend to grow on one side so the tree needs to be permanently staked. Susceptible to fire blight and wooly aphid.
Misc. notes:      Virus free. A large burr knot grows at the union which should be  a few inches above the ground.
