Prefers well-drained soil
|
| Strengths:
|
Known to yield better fruit quality than EM VIIa
and usually crops in the third year. Suckers are minimal (though fast-growing)
and this rootstock exhibits some resistance to collar rot (unless planted in
wet or infected soil). Able to withstand some competition from grass and
weeds,

| Weaknesses:
|
Roots are more supple than on EM VIIa but tend to
grow on one side so the tree needs to be permanently staked. Susceptible to
fire blight and wooly aphid.
